A World in Play: Defining the New Levers of Power

After decades of geopolitical consistency and relative predictability, the terms of engagement have abruptly changed. Conflict and competition have displaced trade liberalization, economic integration and interdependent security. Multilateralism and mutual self-interest have given way to sovereignty and strategic autonomy. The foundations of trust have crumbled. Mark Carney calls it the “rupture.”

There are obvious echoes of history in this moment. Hard power has returned as the primary instrument of statecraft. Yet there are other factors shaping our collective future: technology, energy, data, critical minerals, food supplies, medicines, logistics, and control over currency, capital and payment systems. And in these arenas, the private sector, not government, is often the dominant force. Ultimately, how those levers of power are defined and exercised may prove more consequential than military might.

A world in play offers risk and opportunity–the potential for new alliances, new partnerships and new bonds of trust alongside the possibility of greater abundance, prosperity and well-being. It rewards those who can act decisively, move nimbly, and execute with discipline. It exposes those who fail to recognize and adapt to the changing nature of industry, commerce, finance, diplomacy, even war.

From Oct.13–15 in New Delhi, the Bloomberg New Economy Forum will be a workshop for this new, emerging order, bringing together our community of corporate and public-sector leaders from around the world to frame this moment in time, to exchange ideas and to choose the path forward. India, a country at the leading edge of this advance and with an ambitious agenda for economic transformation, is the optimal location for forging the new rules of global engagement.

As countries and companies prepare for this unfolding future, Bloomberg New Economy is shaping the essential debate on strategies for survival and success.
